Tutorial

Africa Assets data has been collected from press releases, third party news sources and through conversations with GPs, LPs and other industry stakeholders. Data is available on a subscription basis for Africa Assets members. Non-members are able to browse sample database entries in order to get a feel for our database format and capabilities. Please see here for more information about subscriptions.

Data is currently organised on this website under three categories: Deals, Exits, and Funds.

Deals & Exits

The Deals & Exits section of the database provides information on all deals and exits that have been reported by PE/VC firms in sub-Saharan Africa from January 2011 to date. Deals & Exits lists are constantly updated with the latest activity. Upcoming deals and exits that have been reported or rumoured but not completed are also shown here. Functions for this section include:

  • The deals and exits lists may be sorted by Date, Company Name, or Sector by clicking on each respective heading.
  • Detailed information on each deal or exit can be accessed by clicking on the deal/exit name on the main spreadsheet;
  • Users may also click on a GP name to see a list of all of the deals, exits and funds that relate to that GP.

Funds

The Funds section of the database provides a relatively comprehensive list of active private equity funds targeting sub-Saharan Africa. “Active” refers to funds that are currently fundraising and/or investing. The Funds list also includes some funds that are fully invested, divesting, or fully divested. However, the list of these funds is in no way comprehensive. As Africa Assets grows, our funds data will also grow to include information on more inactive funds. The funds list is constantly updated with the latest fund activity, including fund launch and fundraising information. Functions for this section include:

  • The funds list may be sorted by Launch Date, Fund Name, or Target by clicking on each respective heading;
  • Detailed information on each fund can be accessed by clicking on the fund name on the main spreadsheet;
  • Users may also click on a GP name to see a list of all of the deals, exits and funds that relate to that GP.
  • Coming soon: work is underway to include information on related deals and LP commitments for each fund in the fund database.

Search Boxes & Data Exports

Data shown on the deals, exits and funds spreadsheets can be filtered by selecting a variety of options in the search boxes above each spreadsheet. Custom search results may be exported and downloaded as an excel spreadsheet by selecting the "export" button. These exports will not include the detailed data points that come up on a separate page when a specific deal, exit or fund is selected from the main list. Exports that incorporate this additional level of detail are available in most cases to members upon request. For more information regarding detailed data exports, please write to support@africa-assets.com.

Methodology

For information regarding Africa Assets’ data collection process, please see the Methodology section. Details regarding the various categories and terms used in our database are available in the Database Glossary.

Data Aggregation

Data presented in our online database offers only line-by-line information on PE/VC funds, deals and exits. Africa Assets does not at this stage provide top line, aggregate data on fundraising and investment totals. However, we are working hard to develop an aggregation program in order to extract quarterly reports from the fundraising and investment data that we track. This service will be available to our members in 2012.

LP Activity

Africa Assets does systematically track LP commitments to PE/VC funds. We are in the midst of building a searchable LP activity database, which will be available to members soon.
